You know when you're younger you always get asked the same question. Besides, "what do you want to be when you grow up?", or "what's your favorite food?", it seems like everyone is always interested in, "if you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?". Australia. Always and forever it has been Australia. Except for a short stint in third grade where I thought an African safari would be pretty rad. And then I figured I would probably get eaten by a lion. So it was back to Australia by default. And then Finding Nemo came out and it sealed the deal. So pretty much that first step off the plane was when all of my wildest childhood dreams came true (except the dream where we won the Disneyland contest we entered in at Hardees). And Sydney sure did not disappoint. With her endless blue skies, golden sand beaches, New York City vibe and the ever photogenic Opera House. I had the opportunity to go with my best friend for a girl's weekend where we just drank up the sights, inhaled the smells and ate our way through the city. We pounded that pavement until our feet were blistered and bleeding and then fell exhausted at the end of the day into the crisp white sheets or our luxury downtown hotel in the heart of it all. It was fabulous. Every single bit of it. I was lucky enough to come back a second time and bring the whole family, so this travel guide is family friendly too!
Where to go
Sydney Opera House
Walk around and enjoy the beautiful architecture, or buy tickets for a tour or performance here

Bondi Beach
Iconic Bondi Beach is a must when visiting the city.

Be sure to take in some or all of the Bondi-Bronte-Coogee coastal cliff walk (6km).

And for a unique experience, try swimming in an ocean swimming pool at the Icebergs Swimming Club

Harbour cruise to Manly Wharf
There are several different harbour cruise options here that are a great way to get a different perspective of the city. The hop-on-hop-off option is a great option, as well as the dinner cruise. Just be sure to explore Manly Wharf with it's cute beachside shops and cafes.

Sydney Harbour Bridge
Walk, jog or ride a bike across the bridge, or if you're a thrill seeker, check out the Bridge Climb. Or for the same amazing views for a fraction of the cost, I highly recommend the Pylon Lookout.

View of the Sydney skyline from the bridge

The Rocks
The Rocks is a fun neighborhood with historic homes, charming cafes and cobblestone streets. They have an open market Friday-Sunday. Just a short walk up through the Rocks and you'll get to Observatory Hill which is the best spot for watching the sunset.

Circular Quay
Circular Quay is the main ferry terminal and always has a fun energy. Enjoy one of the many open air restaurants where you can dine under the glow of the Sydney Opera House lit up at night.

Hyde Park & St Mary's Cathedral
Hyde Park is a beautiful 40-acre park perfect for strolling through and admiring the gardens and taking pictures under the dreamy fig tree lined pathways before heading to St Mary's Cathedral where you can tour inside (out of respect do not take photos inside).

Darling Harbour
Darling Harbour is a fun place to walk around and explore. It has a shopping center, Imax movie theater, playground, markets, the Chinese Friendship Garden, the Sydney Aquarium, Madame Tussauds, Sydney Wildlife World and the Cockle Bay Wharf.

Stroll the streets of downtown
Wandering the streets with no agenda is sometimes my favorite way to explore a city, just let the sights, sounds and smells lead the way and you never know what you'll discover...like the Angel Place Bird cage art installment (located at George St to Pitt St), or this incredible staircase inside the Queen Victoria Building, or the bustling night market at Chinatown (fridays 4-11).

Getting Around
Sydney has great public transportation, the trains are the cleanest I think I have ever been on. Sydeny makes it easy to get around with trains, buses, ferry services, Light rail lines, sightseeing buses and taxi services, check here for more information. You will need an Opal card to load funds on for transportation, you can get them online or at select shops. The Shuttle Bus 555 is a free shuttle that operates seven days a week around Central Sydney. It runs every 10 minutes from Central Station to Circular Quay and back in a loop, so hop on and hop off to explore more of the city.

Where to eat
There are so many amazing places to eat in Sydney, but here are just a few recommendations to get you started:
-Glenmore Hotel on Cumberland st rooftop bar
-Bourke Street Bakery in the trendy Surrey Hills neighborhood
-Gelbison Pizzeria on Lamrock ave in Bondi
-Harry’s Café de Wheels famous pies for it's pies- go to the Woolloomooloo and Haymarket location and you can spot Russell Crowe’s penthouse at end of wharf
-Chinese noodle restaurant at Burlington center in Chinatown for handmade noodles, cash only
Other recommendations
Here are a few more things that were on my bucket list but we just didn't have time to do them, which of course means I have an excuse to come back! Hopefully you can check them out and let me know what you think!
Sydney Tower Eye- 360* views of the city
Sydney Olympic Pool- swim under the shadow of the Harbour Bridge
Moonlight Cinema- outdoor cinema in the summer
Bronte Beach- free ocean pool
Taronga Zoo- get up close and personal with some of Australia's cutest animals
And if you ever get a chance to visit during the Vivid Sydney event, it is incredible! The whole city is lit up with neon lights and art installations, it has such an incredible energy and vibe, I've never seen anything like it!
